Russia War Crimes since 1991, are at lower level than the glory days of Russian national hero Josef Stalin. From 1922 – to 1953 Stalin push for a global Communism and Marxist worldview terrorized East Europe and the indigenous people of the Kola Peninsula to Siberia, to further East to the Sea of japan.

Since 1991, there have been numerous allegations of war crimes committed by the official armed and paramilitary forces of the Russian Federation. These crimes include violations of international criminal law, such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Russia is also accused of aiding and abetting crimes committed by puppet states or quasi-states it supports, such as the Luhansk People’s Republic and the Donetsk People’s Republic. Various human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Médecins Sans Frontières, have documented Russian war crimes in Chechnya, Georgia, Ukraine, and Syria. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has reported that Russia used cluster and incendiary weapons in Syria, constituting war crimes. The OHCHR has also found Russia guilty of war crimes in Ukraine in 2022 and 2023. The OSCE has published a report finding Russia guilty of war crimes in the Mariupol hospital airstrike, and there is a possibility that Russia’s targeted killings and enforced disappearances could be crimes against humanity.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has issued numerous verdicts finding the Russian government guilty of enforced disappearances, murder, torture, and failure to investigate these crimes in Chechnya properly. In 2021, the ECHR also found Russia guilty of murder, torture, looting, and destruction of homes in Georgia, as well as preventing the return of displaced Georgians to their territory.

As a result of Russia’s involvement in the war in Ukraine, Western countries have imposed wide-scale international sanctions against Russian officials. In 2016, Russia withdrew its membership from the International Criminal Court (ICC) when the Court began investigating Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Russia officially suspended from the UN Human Rights Council membership due to war crimes in Ukraine. Local courts have found many Russians guilty of war crimes in Chechnya and Ukraine. In 2023, the ICC indicted Vladimir Putin, the longtime Russian leader, for war crimes in Ukraine.
